All in a day’s work

I’m supposed to be on holiday. I’ll repeat it, I’m supposed to be on holiday. Holidays are an excuse to get jobs done that I wouldn’t otherwise do. So..today’s efforts included continuing to manufacture and hang the wardrobe doors in the bedroom (see later) and building a Fedora machine for Mum who wants it tomorrow. She’ll be lucky. It’s going through it’s 15th rebuild, I just CAN’T get it to stick to this machine.

First up there’s no DVD on this machine. Easy job, I just put one in. Then I can’t get it to boot from the DVD. Brainwave - disconnect the CD drive and replace it with DVD. Success! Feeling good from this minor triumph, I moved on…
After about 2 hours loading the Fedora Core 3 DVD the darn GRUB bootloader wouldn’t work. You know, the machine goes through all the startup to the point where it cheekily says GRUB and sits there smiling at me. Tried repair installs, tried no-bootloader installs, still no good. Never mind let’s put RH 8 on there.
Well, contrary to my luck this seemed to work (3 CDs later mind you, and at one time it decided it didn’t like the first one for an hour). Played with that for a while, looking at various setups and thinking it would do, but then realised that Fed3 had an option to stick with an old bootloader - which was now LILO. A cunning plan senor, so off I trundles to install Fed3 again. Can’t remember why, but there was a valid reason, I disconnected the SCSI adapter so the new loadup took ages. Like 3 hours.
Tried it - kernel panic. Same for every time I tried it so I surmied that nothing was about to change. Installed Fed3 again. No good. Tried repair. Tee hee, it laughed.
Right now it’s on its last chance. Strangely I feel quite upbeat this time (like I did every other time).

Intermingled with these computer activities I’ve been designing, redesigning and making the wardrobe doors. Today I find that the hinges I’ve bought are not flush mounting, they need recessing into the door. Mr. Unlucky says that the dpeth of the recess is exactly the same as the thickness of the wood I bought. Tomorrow sees a journey to the DIY shop for some FLUSH hinges.

Nye has insisted on “helping” me. He’s actually really good, he brings tools when asked, he mimics the things I’m doing - right down to measuring things and going “Hmm” and scratching his head. After a period of incessant babbling yesterday (don’t know WHO he gets it from) I asked him to be quiet so I could think. Now whenever there’s a lull in the proceedings he asks “Are we thinking Daddy?” and makes “Hmm” noises quietly. He’s a treasure as is his sister.
Rhiannon says loads of words now - notably “Hallo”. She says it in such a way that you just have to say Hallo back. She also says “Rhi’annon” with the same intonation and emphasis that Karen uses when Rhi’s getting told off - really funny.
Steve and Claire took Nye to town today which gave us a few hours’ respite. Steve was trying to get out of going to Cheshire Oaks (can’t blame him) and succeeded. Apparently Nye was really good but he told Claire that he always goes into town on the bus (what a fibber) and on the way out he told them that they needed groceries. Claire loves the way Nye comes out with these statements from beyond his years.

Nuts. The darn thing now tells me there’s an error uncompressing the kernel. It’ll have to wait for new discs fro mthe Linux Empporium (full OS for £8 or so. Bargain).

Kismet. Having got it going nicely due to a new IDE drive (the new kernel didn’t recognise the Mylex SCSI card), and Nye’s mastered asteroids, a Bad Thing happens. While my back was turned, he took the front-loading SCSI out while the machine was running.

Result: Dead machine. Ah well. Back to the drawing board.
